Joel Epstein gets to spend a lot of time with his kids, but that hasn't always been the case.

Epstein spent 14 years working for Comcast.

"They decided that my position, as it stood, was no longer relevant to the department I was with and they decided to let me go," he says.

Unemployed, Epstein found himself spending a lot of time in the kitchen.

"Well over the time that I was unemployed, I actually started cooking more for my family and I picked up a lot of gourmet recipes."

That's not the only reason Epstein started cooking.

His oldest son developed severe stomach issues and his wife and the couple's other three children developed food sensitivities that greatly impacted their ability to eat in restaurants.

It was another reason why Epstein decided to go to culinary school.

The treats Chef Epstein made in class became a hit with family and friends.

His wife even brought them into her work and on paydays people started offering up cash for the cakes.

That's how "Payday Poundcakes" was born.

"We're doing everything online. We're shipping anywhere in the country. I deliver anywhere in the county," he says.

Epstein uses his church congregation's kitchen space and his wife does the marketing, which is all done online.

"Payday Poundcakes" is a family business that has brought this family closer together.
