This Sunday is Fathers Day.
At our morning meeting, someone was going on about the abundance of card selection there always is with Mother's Day and dad's day is always a little more barren.
Dunno why that is.
I almost fell out of my chair one time when I heard a statistic on the news.
Most everyone calls mother on Mother's Day to wish her well. This survey said many call dad collect on Father's Day to speak with him.
But, it does make sense.
Although dad is a man like everyone else, if dad did step up and play the role of father we tend to see him in sort of a superhero mold.
A guy who never needs encouragement because he's dad.
You know years ago there was a song out by David Gates.
You know, David Gates and bread.
The song was called "Everything I Own."
It was a little bit sappy, a 1970s ballad.
But the words that always stuck with me where "you never said too much but still you showed the way...and I knew...from watching you."
Back then, we all thought that was a lyric about a girl. A lost lover.
Come to find out, that was a song written as a tribute by David Gates to his father after his father just died.
And it sounds like David Gates'' father was a lot like my father and I bet yours.
So, even though dad may be the silent type. Call him and wish him well this Father's Day.
Even if you have to call him collect.
Because many of us who's dad's are gone, we'd give everything we own to speak with them.
That's my point of view, what's yours?
