Tyler, tx — We see so much tragedy working in a newsroom.
Sometime we just blot it out--- we have to.
But everyone I work with was so touched by the story of the little boy who was found dead by rescuers early this morning.
Each child is special. This little boy really tugged at our heartstrings because he had special needs.
But, something else that is special. You, the people of East Texas.
I've lived in many places. Many of them considered cool, trendy places to settle down.
I never felt right in those places. But, my wife and I are comfortable here.
Besides being around family, the main reason is the people of East Texas.
Last night we are all astounded by the generosity of the neighbors of the parents of the lost child.
Our reporters said police had to turn volunteers away. Many brought food.
I remember when the space shuttle exploded over us. For a long time, strangers were in our backyards working, and I can tell you they were stunned by the graciousness and generosity of East Texans.
I was working in the Dallas TV market then. Our reporters and satellite truck drivers were overcome with your hospitality.
Once again, East Texans showing concern for those who were here from a different part of the country and were alone. Also, bringing food.
Most of our newsroom is young. When they are done here, most want to go back home or some still love the allure of a larger, more cosmopolitan city.
Well, been there, done that.
But, I'll tell them there may be so called "cooler" places to live. But no one can match the caring, loving quality of East Texas people.
I know why we are like we are, and if you are from here, you know too.
I pray to God we never lose that kindness.
That's my point of view, what's yours?
