We need a food stamp overhaul

tyler — I saw this in Laura Ingram's blog today.
At one of those hoity-toidy fish markets in the Washington D.C. area there was a sign on top of the jumbo crab legs saying you can buy that seafood delicacy with your food stamp card.
Now before you think I am heartless and cruel let me assure you I am not.
But, food stamps for that?
Also a story in Seattle yesterday about a rich couple living in the lap of luxury on Lake Washington with a scam of her husband evicting her from their home, and she's getting government assistance and food money from uncle sugar.
The Wall Street Journal reports food stamp use continued to rise in the U.S last year, with almost 12% of all households receiving some form of the assistance.
The Census Bureau says it's 15%.
Mississippi reported the largest share of its population relying on food stamps, more than 21%. One in five residents in New Mexico, Tennessee, Oregon and Louisiana also were food stamp recipients.
Look, this is one reason I hate to see taxes go up.
I think there is a lot of fraud in the system.
And if this many people need food because of hard times, I say let them get job training to get those benefits.
We just can't keep hauling out food stamps for everyone. Trouble is there are many politicians that see handing out goodies for votes. That's the cultural war we are in right now.
Let me say again, if you really need the help, you need the help.
But, if you don't, shame on you and we need to get that fixed.
But this is all good news, according to this administration. Remember, food stamps stimulate the economy!
That's NOT my point of view, but you can email me anyway at email@example.com.
