Power outages persist in ETX
East Texas (KETK) — Sunday's Ice storm has left many East Texans without power two days after its arrival. As of this morning, more than 8,000 in Upshur County alone were in the dark.
According to Upshur Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation (URECC), as of 11 a.m., about 7,000 URECC residence were without electricity. The hardest hit areas were East Mountain, Kilgore, Noonday, Lake O' the Pine and Glenwood.
Outages were mainly caused by ice accumulating on trees, knocking down limbs and trees, which tripped breakers. There are also reported broken poles and downed power lines, said URECC.
The public is asked to stay away from any downed power lines while crews work to repair the issue.
URECC website states they are receiving a high volume of calls, and they are handling them as efficiently as possible. Outages can also be reported on the "Smart Hub" app, which can be accessed on their website at www.URECC.coop under E-bill or downloaded on cellphones.
About 1,300 SWEPCO customers are reportedly without power Tuesday afternoon. Only 536 outages have been reported in Smith County.
