Read your fines away

Even with late fees from overdue books, kids at one Wisconsin library can get their hands on some of their favorite books by reading off their IOUs.

At the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire, youth 18 and under are able to read to get rid of some of their overdue fees. It's called Read Off Your Fines.

According to the library, overdue books fines can stack up. The Eau Claire library sees late fees in the thousands of dollars.

Ashley Bieber with Youth Services at the library says it's a program that will helps kids as they learn about responsibility.

"They come to to the youth services desk and we fill out a little card for them that has information on their name, card number, their number of Eau Claire fines that they have and then they can read either in the Youth Services program room or upstairs in the young adults lounge and for every 15 minutes that they read they get a dollar off their fine," says Bieber.
