The Longview Lobos and the Lufkin Panthers will be the big winners when high school realignment is announced next Monday.

They will both stay in the new 5A classification.

That's really like moving down because just about everyone else is moving up.

Longview and Lufkin did not have big enough enrollments to move up to the new 6A division and that's a good thing for the Lobos and the Panthers.

They would have been small schools in a big bracket, but now they will be big schools in a smaller bracket.

Football is a numbers game and the numbers are going to be very good for the Green Guys and the Purple People.

Lufkin will be the third-largest 5A team in Texas.

Longview will be the 14th-largest 5A team in the state.

That will mean a lot especially in the playoffs.

But it's not good news for Lindale and Sulphur Springs.

Lindale will be the ninth-smallest 5A team in Texas.

Sulphur Springs will be the eighth-smallest in the new 5A.

The new 5A will have Lufkin, Longview, John Tyler, Nacogdoches, Whitehouse, Marshall, Lindale, Sulphur Springs, Hallsville, Texas High, Mount Pleasant, Pine Tree and Jacksonville.

The Kilgore Bulldogs almost won it all last year.

The Ragin' Red made it to the state championship game.

Kilgore didn't win at AT&T Stadium, but the Dawgs will win big in realignment.

Kilgore will be one of the bigger schools in their classification.

The Bulldogs will have the numbers to do big things again for the next two years.

Kilgore will be the fourth-largest 4A team in Texas.

That's the good news.

But it's not good news for Spring Hill.

The Spring Hill Panthers will be the ninth-smallest 4A team in the state.

The new 4A will have Kilgore, Chapel Hill, Henderson, Gilmer, Bullard, Gladewater, Spring Hill and more.

Carthage, Tatum, Rusk, Diboll, Athens, Canton, Van, Libberty-Eylau, Pittsburg, Pleasant Grove and Atlanta will also be East Texas teams in the new 4A classification.

White Oak, Troup and Arp will be in 3A along with Frankston, West Rusk, Elysian Fields, Daingerfield, New Boston, Harmony, Quitman, Hughes Springs and Crockett.

Tyler Lee will be the only area team competing in the new 6A division.
