LONGVIEW, TX --- The Longview Fire Department will install smoke alarms in approximately 100 private residential homes. The homes lacking smoke alarms were identified by the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels Ministry, Inc. Due to the lack of mobility and means to provide their own smoke alarms, the Red Cross and Fire Department can combine forces to meet this need and provide a safer living environment for the elderly and disabled clients that Meals on Wheels Ministry, Inc. serves. The smoke alarms will be installed by Longview Fire Department firefighters the week of 9-27-10.

The Fire Department and Red Cross already work in conjunction with each other during times of disaster and fire loss. On many occasions, we have been able to provide a path for those in need without other resources to receive assistance from the Red Cross after a significant fire loss while we are still on the fire scene.

The smoke alarms that will be installed were provided by a generous donation by the Rotary Club and the American Insurance Council of Texas grant program. The Red Cross, Longview Fire Department and Meals on Wheels Ministry, Inc. are proud to collaborate and join forces to help the vulnerable elderly and disabled of our community.

This past year the East Texas Piney Woods Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to 108 house fires, assisting 346 individuals with emergency food, shelter and clothing. The ability to serve is based on money raised locally through the chapter by way of donations and fundraisers such as the upcoming 3rd Annual Sporting Clay Classic on October 1st. Meals on Wheels Ministry, Inc. serves more than 400 meals daily in Longview, and served more than 125,000 meals across Gregg County this past year.
