LONGVIEW - Some cities have had red-light cameras for several years, while others are just now installing them.
Officers say the cameras are meant to catch people who run red lights and reduce car wrecks at intersections.
Officer Brownlee said, "A lot of the intersections that have accidents involved, people disregarded the traffic signals."
The study shows state wide, the cameras have reduced right-angle crashes by 43-percent, and overall reduced crashes by 30-percent.
Although intersection accidents are down 11-percent in Longview, officers say they can't completely attribute that to the red light cameras.
Brownlee said, "We don't have data from those intersections because the programs are relatively new, but interstate accidents are down so far this year."
He said, If somebody pulls up to an intersection and makes a complete stop just because their afraid theres a red-light camera then that increases safety, so in that alone its done its job."
