Registered sex offender robs grandmother at gunpoint

A New Iberia man has been taken into custody after he allegedly pulled a gun on his grandmother and robbed her.

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident occurred on Monday, April 22 in the 1300 block of West Saint Peter. Witnesses told deputies that the suspect, Brett Philips, 21, pulled out a gun on an elderly woman and demanded money from her. The victim gave her an undisclosed amount of cash.

Investigators later learned that the victim is Philips grandmother. They also learned that he is a convicted sex offender.

Philips was located at his residence off Lake Tasse Drive on Tuesday, April 23, which is when the incident was reported. He was taken into custody without issue.

Philips was charged with Armed Robbery, as well as Failure to Notify Temporary Change of Address, in reference to his status as a sex offender.
