Remembering 'Coach' Stacy Hunter: 1968-2012

"It's very important for me to be a father figure for these kids out here because I didn't have a father figure in my life when I was coming up. That way I can easily give back to these kids out here and show them what I went through." - 'Coach' Stacy Hunter, KETK Archives 2004

"Coach" Stacy was a popular guy in Jacksonville.

Matt Montgomery has been broadcasting from the sidelines at the Tomato Bowl for 31 years now.  He knew Stacy Hunter when he was a promising young Tribe football player back in the mid '80s.

Since then, Matt says he's coached kids in everything from pop warner to little dribblers to little league baseball.

And it was more than just coaching.

"He was a mentor to a lot of these kids that may not have had a father at home and he would pick them up, take them home.  He just was the guy that you would want to coach your kid," Montgomery said.

Monday morning was heartbreaking for city employees at J'ville Public Works where Hunter has worked for about 20 years, most recently as a Code Enforcement officer.

The department met Monday morning to discuss where to go from here.

"Our conversations always kind of led back to his family and what we might be able to do to help his family.  Because his family was a big part of his life," said director Will Cole.

Jacksonville police say around 6:00 Saturday morning, 24-year-old Jimmy Deshawn Mosely turned himself in for shooting hunter inside "Stacy's" club on Highway 69 just hours earlier with the intent to rob him.

We're told Coach Stacy and Jimmy Mosely are cousins.

According to new information from Jacksonville Police, when they got to the club Saturday morning around 4:00, they found hunter dead inside the club, shot twice -- in the arm and the chest.

Mosely is currently in the Cherokee County jail charged with capital murder -- with a bond set at $250,000.
