The school explosion claimed the lives of hundreds of children, and changed our nation forever

On March 18th, 1937 the worst school disaster in American history took place right here in East Texas in the small town on New London. Known in American History as the New London school explosion, the result of a natural gas leak. In total, 293 students and teachers died that day.

The school built a monument two years later, commemorating the lives lost, and the town now has a museum dedicated to the event. Tuesday marks the 77th anniversary of that horrible accident that changed our Nations history.
