Tyler, TX (KETK) — Following President Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday night, U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert discussed the speech with his guest for the evening, Fox News' Sean Hannity.
In his speech, the President said that he would act alone to boost the economy, ease regulations to bring jobs back from overseas, build more manufacturing hubs, create retirement savings for workers whose employers don't offer them, and raise the minimum wage to more than $10 an hour for new federal contractors.
"The President pointed out some very noble things," Gohmert said. "We all want people to do better. We want people to work. We want to use more of our energy. All those things we agree on. It's just that his track record for the last five years belies what he's saying."
Gohmert compared the President to Santa Claus, saying that he is promising to give the public whatever they want.
"He's got the children paying for the gifts to the parents," Gohmert said.
Hannity was quick to agree with his friend and host for the evening. The radio and television host added that with $7 trillion in debt, "we are robbing from our kids and from our grandkids".
"I think it's immoral, and it can be stopped," Hannity said.
Rep. Gohmert argued that, despite the President's 'lovely speech', the government needs to get out of the way in order to see the economy take off the way everyone hopes it will.
"In East Texas, we love when you talk about the potential for this economy if we will just let the economy run," Gohmert told Hannity. "In East Texas we produce more natural gas than any other Congressional district in Texas. We're still producing oil... you know, they get it there."
Hannity agreed with the Tyler resprentative.
"[America] has more gas, more shale, more coal, more energy than the entire Middle East combined. And we could create jobs and weath, help pay down our debt and pay socal security off," Hannity said. "To me that is the single greatest answer."
"There are better days ahead," Gohmert concluded. "But it's going to be in spite of the government, not because of the government."
