The announcement of his resignation came just hours after news broke that Gawker-dot-com posted the photo, and flirtatious emails.

The woman broke contact after Googling him and learning he is a two-term Congressman.

Last fall, Lee won 74 percent of the vote.

In a statement, Lee admitted "profound mistakes" and said: "I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all."
