Longview, TX — New federally designated flood plain maps for the area are ready for public viewing, and there likely will be surprises in store.
The new digitized maps are more accurate, and some areas identified as flood prone may now be designated as in a flood plain. That designation comes with more expensive property insurance.
City and county officials are asking the public to review the revised maps made available by the Federal Emergency Management Agency during a 90-day appeal and comment period.
The period ends in late September, depending on what date a city or county published its legal notice in local newspapers.
Mark Adas, city of Longview flood plain administrator, recommends anyone living near a creek, or whose property has flooded before, to take time to look at the maps.
