Road work gives residents new outlook on Whiskey Bend

A highly trafficked Gregg County road stretching between Longview and Lakeport may no longer live up to its menacing moniker.

Known by many as “Whiskey Bend,” Texas 149 between Huntsman Way in Longview and Gardiner Mitchell Parkway in Lakeport was long considered one of the most dangerous stretches in Gregg County.

But a series of events, including road work and alcohol sales being allowed in rural cities, has led to a drop in fatal and nonfatal wrecks along the 1.8-mile stretch of state highway.
