Rusk County voters have voted to increase the tax rate from 3% to 7% to help 16 county fire departments.

The increase raises the county emergency service budget from  $600,000 to $1.6 million, which will be used to purchase fire tricks, fire equipment and training equipment.

The fire departments are in need of the funds after attempts to get money from the state have failed and state grants have been taken away.

Rusk County Judge Joel Hale says without residents showing their support for the tax hike, the fire departments could have been in jeapordy.

" It was generous on the part of our tax payers..a real understanding of how important important those people are to the safety of our citizens..and the safety of our property."

The tax increase applies only to residents that live outside the city municipality.
