Interestingly enough though, Rusk State Hospital was originally Rusk State Penitentiary.
It was a prison from 1883 to 1917.
In 1919, it was transformed into a hospital for criminally insane African-Americans.
In 1953, a maximum security unit was added to house those who were judge not guilty by reason of insanity in violent crimes.
In 1988, that duty was transferred to Vernon State Hospital.
Well, now…it’s coming back.
In fact prisoners have already been transferred.
Although they were sent to other facilities, we’re talking about people like Andrea Yates of Houston, or another case of child murder, Deanna Laney.
These are the kinds of cases that the new unit will handle.
Despite the assurances from the state, the folks in Rusk we talked to, who didn’t want to go on camera, are a bit nervous.
We wanted to talk with the staff at the hospital, but the state said no.

There is a difference between the way Correction's Officers get to protect themselves and the way RSH has a "no hands policy"and are subject to being beaten by the patients. If the staff protects themselves they get filed on for abuse. Reports are staff are bidding off the unsafe new unit. Now, the person who pushed for the Maximum Security Unit is leaving RSH. Wonder why?
Rusk state worker have no protection not even the training they give you if you use it you get fired turn you in APS and then you might have charges file on and then the really big one you get blackballed and no one will hire you not even a people greeting jobs
Rusk state hospital is a joke They not only have very dangerous Inmate there they never have enough staffs to cover there units. They have file and fire on so many there noone standing in line for a job they should have never brought these inmate here in the first place.Just a mess up that going to happen.
And if you go straight up the hill behind Rusk State Hospital you find theTDCJ Skyview and Hodge Units. I don't understand the concern.
