RUSK, TEXAS (KETK) — We told you about the dire need for mental health professionals in East Texas. One local psychiatric hospital says they're having a tough time treating all of their patients.
We visited Rusk State Hospital in Cherokee County on Wednesday and as you drive by the hospital you'll see a "Now Hiring" sign.
They're hiring RN's Registered Nurses, LVN's Licensed Vocational Nurse's, Psychologists, Social Workers and Direct Care Workers.
Rusk State hospital is a psychiatric hospital that has 335 beds and that's not enough, plus they don't have enough people to fill positions. "We are always looking to hire LVN's and RN's, on average we run around five LVN vacancies as well as 5 RN vacancies."
Superintendent Brenda Slaton has been working at Rusk State Hospital for about 30 years and says there's no better way to get hands-on experience. "They have been deemed as a danger to themselves and to others and cannot be managed in the community."
Slaton encourages students and graduates to apply. "We are real fortunate at this facility that we have a partnership with TJC," said Monagan.
The Dean of School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Tyler Junior College Paul Monagan says he sees the need for more nurses. "A 20 seat LVN program, so this program is designed back in 2010 for 20 students that would wish to become Licensed Vocational Nurses," said Monagan. The Vocational Nursing Education Program at Rusk State Hospital allowing students to work 20 hours at the hospital and 20 hours in the classroom.
This hospital is the second largest of 12 mental health facilities under the department of state health services in Texas. Hospital staff tell us, they're looking forward to more mental health funding to manage the people in need here in East Texas.
