Sales taxes up during holiday season

Lufkin — In what could be a sign of an improving economy, Lufkin extended its string of monthly increases in year-to-year sales tax revenue in January, according to a state comptroller report released Wednesday.
Lufkin showed an increase of about 4.6 percent, collecting $1,496,782 compared to $1,431,621 collected in January 2011.
Lufkin has collected $2,499,628 in the first two months of the year, up about 3.7 percent from the $2,410,219 collected in the first two months of 2011.
