(CNN) -- Same-sex couples must be permitted to marry in New Jersey based on an earlier U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the matter, a New Jersey judge ruled Friday.

"Same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution," Judge Mary Jacobson of the Mercer County Superior Court wrote in her ruling.

The ruling comes more than a year after Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a bill that would have legalized same-sex marriage in the state.

New Jersey has recognized civil unions between same-sex couples since 2007.
