LUFKIN - Consolidated Communications Fraud Division notified Lufkin Police Department that several Consolidated Communications telephone service customers have received telephone calls from unknown persons falsely claiming to be Consolidated Communications staff.
Fraud Division personnel stated that the unidentified scammers have called customers and claimed that the customer's account is past due and that failure to make payment by credit card during that telephone call would result in the immediate telephone service disconnection. The scammers have also demanded that the customer provide personal identifying information, such as date of birth and social security number.
Consolidated Communications stated that they do make contact by telephone with customers regarding past due accounts but they do not demand immediate, over-the-phone credit card payment and they do not threaten immediate service disconnection. Consolidated Communications stated that legitimate calls concerning a past due account will include multiple payment options, such as by payment by mail, in person, and by credit card, and will specify a future disconnect date for unpaid accounts.
If you receive a past due account call, do not provide any information until you verify the identity and authority of the person calling. If you have any questions concerning a Consolidated Communications related telephone call you receive or if you have any information concerning this scam or scammers, contact Consolidated Communications Customer Service Center, (866) 989-2255, or Fraud Division, (800) 224-9126.
