The Smith County Area Go Texan committee is recognizing and raising money for ag students. This year they are hosting the first-ever scholarship banquet and dinner. The event will be taking place at KE Bushman's event center in Bullard on July 12.

Everyone is welcome to come to this event all you need is a ticket. Ag students work so hard all year long and it's time to recognize all their work. "These livestock shows that we attend, they give back to the community in these kids tremendously," said Preston Lindsey, Troup Ag teacher.

The Houston livestock show & rodeo is the big event giving more than two-million dollars toward scholarships each year. Sixty-eight counties in texas are invited to show, and smith county was one of them.

It guarantees one student in each county an $18,000 scholarship each year. "We only had six people that applied for the scholarship there in Houston and so one of them Dylan Bacon out of Lindale received the scholarship," sid Preston.

Embassador and ag teacher Preston Lindsey of Troup ISD says the up-coming banquet is going to recognize these scholars. "And award them a scholarship from our area Smith County Go Texan, all the money that we raise in Smith County stays here in Smith County, most of our students won't be able to attend college without scholarships."

For some students summer break is spending time at school taking care of their animals. "I have a heifer in there that I feed twice a day and work with her and break her and get her ready for shows this fall," said Savannah Martin, senior at Troup. Martin says she's going finish her year with good grades and continue to show. "Hopefully get into SFA, and get on with my learning and hopefully become a nurse."

Lindsey says the goal is to keep these ag-students funded for a bright future.
