JACKSONVILLE-Police say 11 Jacksonville students are recovering from a big collision with an 18-wheeler.

It happened at the intersection of Highway 69 and Loop 456 around 7:30 a.m. Monday. The school bus was less than a quarter of a mile from Nichols Intermediate School where the students were being dropped off when they were hit.

Police tell us the bus was headed west on Loop 456 on their way to the school when the 18-wheeler traveling south on Highway 69 t-boned the bus after failing to stop in time at the light.

The driver of the 18-wheeler told police he saw the light, but was unable to stop in time. Police say he walked away with no injuries.

The school bus held a total of 31 people, two of them were the driver and a monitor. The rest of them children.

School officials say of the 29 children, 11 of them had to be rushed to the hospital.

"We had counselors who actually went to the hospital and sat with the children until a parent of guardian arrived," Nichols Intermediate School Principal Tammy Jones said. "Then we had counselors who went to our campus who were with the students not transported to the hospital so that they could provide them support as well."

Officials say the 11 kids who were sent to the hospital suffered only minor injuries. All of them have since been released from the hospital and are doing fine.
