School zones: play it safe

Friday, August 23, 2013 - 6:43pm

"I want to know that my daughter is going to be safe."

Samantha McCullough is just one mom who worries about her daughter.

"I don't want to be worrying while I'm at work," McCullough said.

The best way to stop something like that from happening? Pay attention to the road and follow the rules. Last year Tyler police issued 2,585 citations for speeding in a school zone and 626 citations for cell phone use in a school zone.

"Schools back in session," said Tyler Police Department Public Information Officer, Don Martin. "You need to watch your speed and stay off your cell phone."

While it is legal to use your phone while driving in Tyler, it is illegal in any school zone.

"[If] you're texting or talking on it," Officer Martin said. "You will be issued a citation for talking on the phone in a school zone."

But it is more than just slowing down and getting off your phone. Police urge people to pay really close attention and watch for cross guards.

"Make sure [you] pay attention," Martin said. "When they get out in the middle of the road and say stop that means stop."

East Texas moms urge you to take caution.

"Kids, they're already not paying attention," McCullough said. "So yeah, it's your responsibility to make sure you're paying attention."
