WASHINGTON — Ron Wheeler is a born and raised East Texas Veteran.

He spent 4 years on a tanker in the Navy in the '60s.

Now he and his wife operate 'Veterans Vending' with part of their proceeds going toward disabled vets.

He thinks the new Veterans jobs bill that was passed overwhelmingly by the senate on Thursday is a good idea.

"I also think it's kind of sad that it took an act of congress to get an employer to hire disabled veterans, they've already proven at least one time that they'd put their life on the line for one job, and I think that's the kind of person that I would want to hire," Wheeler said.

The legislation will provide tax credits up to $9,600 to employers that hire disabled vets who have been looking for work for half a year.

It will also create job training programs for veterans and members of the military.

On Veterans Day, we caught up with State Representative -- and Veteran -- Leo Berman.

In the Texas House, he serves on the Defense and Veterans Affairs committee.

He agrees with the legislation.

"We do this in Texas as well. If we can do something to give a veteran an advantage to get a job over someone who has not served in the military, especially in a combat zone, I totally support it," Berman said.

It should be noted it's the first part of President Obama's $447 billion jobs bill to go into effect.

The rest of his bill is not doing so well.

"I do not support the entire jobs bill. But the part about veterans benefits...absolutely," Berman said.
