NATIONAL – Breaking news from the campaign trail.
Republican Presidential candidate John McCain is suspending his campaign.
The Senator also wants to put off the Presidential debate.
Senator McCain says he wants time to focus on the economy, and that he’s directing his staff to work with Senator Obama’s campaign to delay Friday’s debate.
The Senator says he will stop campaigning Thursday and return to Washington to focus on the nation’s financial problems.
Mr. McCain said, “Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me."
In a statement this afternoon, Senator Obama said that given the financial crisis, it is now more important than ever to have the debate.
Mr. Obama said that it’s his belief that the American people need to hear from the person who will be responsible for dealing with the mess.
