Sexual abuse trial underway
Longview, TX — A 16-year-old girl who accused a man of sexually assaulting her in 2011 took the witness stand Tuesday to testify in the first day of his trial.
Michael James Chalmers, 43, of Longview sat in the 124th District Court as the girl and her mother testified that he requested inappropriate photographs of the girl and traded privileges for sex.
Chalmers was indicted Aug. 8 by a Gregg County grand jury on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, continued sexual abuse of a child and sexual performance by a child.
The girl took the stand Tuesday and told lead prosecuting attorney Whitney Tharpe that she would have to turn away from Chalmers while answering questions.
“This is bringing back bad memories of what he did to me,” she said.
