Stephen F. Austin State University was recently awarded a $1.9 million five-year grant which will increase the number of teachers with English as a Second Language (ESL) certification at Nacogdoches ISD and Lufkin ISD.

ESL certification is important to understand "the instructional approaches and strategies that can help when they (teachers) have students in their class who are still learning English," said Betty Alford, chair of the department of secondary education and educational leadership at SFA.
