Silvio Berlusconi to carry out community service in nursing home
(CNN) — Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced by an Italian court to a year of community service after his conviction for tax evasion, a member of his legal team told CNN on Tuesday.
The community service will be carried out at a Milan nursing home and Berlusconi will start his sentence "in coming days," the source added.
The 77-year-old center-right politician, who is from Milan, was convicted of charges related to a vast tax fraud conspiracy at his Mediaset television empire.
Berlusconi, a billionaire tycoon who served on and off as prime minister between 1994 and 2011, has dominated the lively Italian political scene for the past two decades.
He resigned in late 2011 after coming under pressure for Italy's economic woes. He was expelled from parliament after his conviction for tax fraud.
It was not immediately clear from the court ruling whether Berlusconi would be able to campaign for his Forza Italia party ahead of European Parliament elections next month.
