Sisterhood fitness: The women that sweat together, stick together
Tyler, TX (KETK) — Fitness is the name of the game for this "Body Combat" group. The class uses everything from boxing to dancing, and inverted-structure workouts to cardio.
However. there's more to this class than knee and leg lifts. It's a fitness sisterhood. KETK spoke with a participant, Ashley Britt, who said, "The ladies we've all become real good friends. We push each other. We're all like 'You can do it"! Britt has been attending the class for one year. She has lost 92 pounds, but gained 19 new friends. Britt shared, "I'm a homebody person and I'm reserved. So I kind of stay by myself in my shell. But my friend brought me out here and it made me outgoing, you know I feel confident and good about myself".
The instructor,Rashad Espie, even started the class to empower women physically, mentally, and emotionally. Espie said, "After my mom passed, she had a young women's ministry. Seeing her at the funeral, and seeing the men and women she had touched, I wanted to do something in that realm". So not only does he teach work out classes, he hosts vent sessions and community service events. Espie said, "It's more than just about the work out because we actually have a bigger connection outside of here where we do our community give-backs and we go out and have days where we spend time together, and everybody gets a chance to know each other".
So the ladies can be their best selves, together. Espie reminded, "You control what you can control. The things you can't control, don't worry about it. You pray about it and you move on. The things that you have in front of you that you can deal with, you deal with and you keep pushing forward. Never let anybody tell you that you can't".
