(KETK) - Tyler Tx — More than 420 acres of Smith County went up in flames Sunday afternoon. What started as eight small grass fires escalated into flames reaching up to 35 feet.
According to the Smith County Fire Marshal, only three structures were reported to be lost in the fire, a mobile home, an empty home and a barn. Multiple cars and out buildings were lost as well.
Texas A&M Forest Service told KETK that the fire was 100 percent contained last night between 10:30 p.m., and 11:00 p.m.
However, there will be crews checking the fire sporadically throughout the week.
KETK talked with residents who lost a lot to the fire.
"It's not fair, the whole world is not fair," said Harold Arterberrie. "If you want fair go to Heaven, because you're not going to find it down here."
Fire officials also want to make clear the cause of the fire is still under investigation, and although they believe it to be caused from a shredding tire spark, they have not ruled out other possibilities.
