TYLER — An ETMC employee confirmed that Smith County has lost one of their own.
54-year-old Britton served as a Smith County deputy since 1992 - today he died from what some called a "freak accident" that took place last week.
Last Thursday, a little after 1 in the morning, 54-year-old Robert Britton was called in by Bullard Police to help direct traffic around an injured cow on FM 344 near Bullard.
The cow appeared to have been hit by a car because of skid marks in the road.
According to Bullard Police Chief Gary Lewis, who was on scene, said as they were directing traffic, the cow, which hadn't been moving - got up and charged Britton, hitting him in the chest and knocking him over.
Deputy Britton suffered head and neck injuries and has been fighting for his life in ICU since last week.
Smith County is not yet releasing any additional information in the case.
