Tyler, Tx — Saturday firefighters from fire stations across Smith County joined together to help their fellow fire brothers in the city of West. These firefighters worked for hours in hopes that these "Fill the Helmet" donations could help rebuild this devastated city.
Street corners across Smith County were filled with area firefighters. These firefighters stood outside with their helmets by their sides, asking East Texans for a donation to help their fellow firefighters.
Whitehouse firefighter Ken Dickey tells KETK, "We can't be their physically, we offered. They said the best thing we can do is send money so that's where we're headed."
The people of Smith County were eager to contribute. Hundreds of cars stopped to put their money in these helmets. The firemen's acts of kindness did not go unnoticed. The stepbrother of one brave West firefighter came to the fundraiser, just to say "Thank you". Relative of West firefighter Ronnie Wigley says, "No place in Texas has a bigger heart than these firemen, in the area and around the state."
If you did not get a chance to contribute at one of these donation stations, there are still ways to help. Dickey says, "You can send a check either to the American Red Cross or to the Salvation Army. Just put "West Explosion" in the comment section. If you get a chance to get out by any of the fire stations they'll be taking donations as well. We'll be sending in donations directly to the fire departments."
