Smith County home catches fire

January 4, 2009 - 11:08pm
SMITH COUNTY-An East Texas man is left homeless Sunday night after his house went up in flames.
The fire took place just before 1:00 p.m. Sunday at a home on County Road 2259, just outside of Tyler. The homeowner, Jerry Herring, said while he was outside working a friend pulled up and noticed smoke coming from the house.
He said he rushed to his house and when he opened the door the house was filled with thick dark smoke. He entered and noticed the flames were coming from the bathroom. He told us he and his friends quickly ran back outside and grabbed the water hose hoping that would put out the fire. A few minutes later three engines from the Chapel Hill Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene to assist."We were able to save quite a bit of the stuff and basically one end of the house," Chief Cody Crawford of the Chapel Hill Fire Department said.
Officials say no one was injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
