Tyler, Texas — Between shootings, fights, and aggravated robberies in the past few weeks, there's one apartment complex that keeps getting calls from Tyler Police.

The Varsity Place Apartments housing agreement states that you can only break contract for three reasons and a lack of safety is not one of them.

Varsity Place Apartments has been making local headlines for weeks due to an increase in crime activity.

Don Martin with Tyler Police said, "We're trying to give more attention to those areas, because of the recent incidents." But why hasn't Varsity Place Apartments itself hired their own 24-hour security?

Martin said, "If the corporation wanted to contact us and ask us for recommendations we could go from there."

We tried to contact the management at the complex. The woman who answered the phone said, "Yah I don't think that she will speak to y'all you'll need to contact our corporate office." We also called corporate and it was an automated machine saying they would try to call back within two days, but for some that is too late.

Former resident, Kyle Money, tells KETK living in Varsity Place Apartments was a nightmare. He said, "There's always that underlying tone of like I'm going to have my key in my hand when I'm going to my car." He also said he tried to break his contract and was even willing to pay the fees but he couldn't find anyone to cover his lease. "It's offensive that i have to be thinking about that when I'm living across the street from school."

We tried to contact UT Tyler, since their website links to the Varsity Place Apartment's website for students who are out of town, but they did not comment.

The Tyler Police website shows a list broken down by apartment complexes and the month of how many times police were called out to the scene. The list for Varsity Place Apartments was lengthy. Martin said, "Those calls were just for September just for that complex."

We also spoke with a Tyler State Farm agent who said she highly recommends students buy renter's insurance since without it, there's nothing they can do if you've been robbed.
