The winter season may bring cooler temperatures, but it also causes an increase in house fires.

Some fires are unavoidable and unpredictable.  However, many of them can be prevented.

Tyler Assistant Fire Marshall Laura Mason says, "we do seem to have an increase in the winter time due to and its usually either a malfunction of some kind of heating appliance."

Heating appliances like space heaters are effective, but according to Servpro's Katie Clarkston they can be the most dangerous appliance.

"They've gotten a lot better over the years the way they have automatic shut offs, but its still a danger," said Clarkston.

Clarkston tells me they're more likely to cause fires because of their use.

"It could produce a lot more damage just because of the time it goes on and if you're sleeping during the fire, it definitely, you don't have the same time reaction as if you were just sitting there cooking," said Clarkston.

Here's some tips to prevent fires from space heaters

-give space heaters space

-make sure the heater is at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn

-replace any heaters that are older than five years

-be smart about where you put them

-keep them out of reach of children and pets

-always remember to turn off any heating appliance whenever you leave your house
