It’s been six months in the making. An idea created by two local museum volunteers, Tommy Eaker and Larry Courington to showcase the sports legends that started their careers in Gregg County begins Saturday, July 13th. The Gregg County Historical Museum will open the doors to the Education Center and the “Sports Legends of Gregg County.”

“Most people don’t realize how many great athletes came from here,” said Tommy Eaker, Committee Chairman. “We started digging in the record books and were surprised by what we found.”

As the memorabilia was delivered, the stories behind that “putt that won the game” or “record home run” put smiles on the men gathered. Each item is displayed to recreate the story. Tommy was quick to point out, “We don’t want to leave anyone out and hope that more people bring items to display during the 5 weeks.”

Some of the “Sports Legends” with items on display include:

Buster Cupit, Chris Davis, Jacky Cupit, Charlie Nea,l Rick Maxey, Ron Cook
Mike Barber, Josh Scobee, Deb Mohon, Trent Williams, Chris Ivory , R.E. & Martha Josey
Bobby Taylor, Max McGee, A Horse Named “Special Agreement”
Ben Spies, Dr. Bill Bussey

The Sports Legends of Gregg County will be on display from July 13th – August 17th. The Gregg Country Historical Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am-4pm, and Saturday 11am-4pm. Each Saturday during the exhibit the Legends are invited to the museum from 11am-2pm for autographs & pictures. The schedule will be updated on the Gregg County Historical Museum Facebook each week. The Museum will also be open until 7pm on July 25th for Artwalk. It is free to the public to attend. Donations are accepted.

The Legends of Gregg County is brought to you in part by the City of Longview Cultural Activities Advisory Committee, The Joyce Crain Foundation, The Patsy Hollandsworth Foundation and Dr. Pepper.

If you have items that should be included in this display please call Tommy Eaker or Lynn Bryson at (903) 753-5840.
