STAAR vs. TAKS: how they add up

In a few months, Texas students will take the STAAR test for the first time.  It's the new standardized test, that's replacing the old TAKS test.  The Texas Education Agency's website says STAAR is a more rigorous assessment, but does that mean more pressure for both the students and the teachers?

STAAR vs. TAKS

STAAR:  State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness

TAKS:  Texas Assessment of Knowlege and Skills

STAAR:  3rd-8th grade assessment same grades and subjects assessed like TAKS

STAAR:  high school assessment general subject area TAKS will be replaced with 12, not 4, STAAR end-of-course (or EOC) assessments

STAAR:  four hour time limit has been placed for STAAR assessments, where TAKS was untimed

STAAR:  less multiple choice questions, more open ended questions with essay format
