There are 3 world class auto shows in Texas…Houston, Dallas and the State Fair of Texas.
But the State Fair runs for 3 weeks, and that means, a lot to manufacturers.
So, they are out in force.
Every year, the Texas Auto Writers Association is invited to preview the State Fair auto display before the doors open to the public.
And each year, they pull out the stops to impress.
If you manufacture cars and trucks, you need to be here.
The State Fair Auto show is the biggest of the year, and if I had to pick a theme this year, it’s trucks.
The day started with breakfast provided by Ram trucks, and then once we’re stuffed, the pitch began.
Over at Toyota, their new Tundra was the star of the show. And if it matters to you, it is now the only pickup actually built in Texas.
Ford and GM jumped years and introduced their 2015 models. For Ford, it’s the new Heavy Duty and King Ranch editions.
GM President Mark Reuss was here as a testament to the importance of the Texas Truck market.
And the unveiling of the new Silverado and Sierra Heavy Duties along with the 2015 Tahoe and Suburban, insure the Texas truck wars will stay fierce.
Jeep showed us the decidedly un-Jeep Cherokee. Still able to off-road with the best of them, the new Cherokee is slicker than we’ve come to expect from Jeep.
The new Dodge Durango was a star of the show, and just in time as The UAW is offering to sell its stake in the company.
Cars weren’t forgotten, as the new Cadillac CTS, and Impala were on display. Consumer reports just called the Impala the best sedan they ever tested, ever.
And for me, the highlight was the new, 2014 Corvette Stingray. Looking like something from Ferrari, it will start just a little over $50-large, which in this segment qualifies as a bargain.
But for shoppers, just wandering among the new models is the simplest way to see what’s out there and what it costs without a salesman looking over your shoulder.
And you can munch a corn dog while doing it.
