Kilgore (Longview News-Journal) — City council members here entered a $203,000 contract Tuesday to demolish an asbestos-riddled, closed school that officials hoped a developer would return to the tax rolls.
Asbestos abatement and demolition of the old C.B. Dansby school, built somewhere around 1930 as Kilgore Colored High School, has taken a couple of troubled steps the past nine months.
“This is going to happen pretty quick,” General Services Director B.J. Owen told council members before they agreed to use a state housing grant to raze the old school in North Kilgore.
Owen told the council Tuesday a ceremony commemorating the school is planned for July 23.
“It’s a demolition-groundbreaking,” he quipped.
The state Neighborhood Stabilization program grant arrived after the city, Gregg County, Kilgore ISD and Kilgore College had all agreed to pony up the demolition funds.
