TEXAS-The State Board of Education is in the process of revising curriculum standards for social studies classes. However, early proposals have left some upset.
Texas could soon see historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Stephen F. Austin left out of course teachings. In addition, proposals remove sections on Veterans Day and Independence Day.
"My philosophy is if you don't know where you have been you don't know where you are going. It's just real surprising to take something out so significant," says East Texan, Angela Jones.
According to a personal responsibility advocacy group, the biographies of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen F. Austin would be stripped from text books of younger students.
"I'm not sure why we would pull that at a time when we seem to be loosing our way financially and in different areas," says East Texan, Justin Demarre.
The proposal is expected to undergo several changes before the final vote next spring in order to allow the public to express their opinion.
The State Board of Education tells KETK that the proposals come from six expert reviewers appointed by the board to review current social studies standards.

I would like to know who these six so called experts are that advised them? Could they explain why they think this is needed? I for one will write my state rep to complain about this! To leave out notable figures like Lincoln and Washington would be like leaving out the Civil War and World War 2.

9 months agoIt is outrageous for our Board of Education to even consider deleting these historical heroes from their curriculum. Perhaps we just need to select a different Board that would not be so tempted to delete our history - from history!!

9 months agoThe whole basis of public education was to create civic pride and responsibility of our students. When you propose to leave out George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and Stephen F. Austin, then the legislature has truly lost the soul of public education. Leave these biographies in the curriculum please!
