Students build model playgrounds for competition
Kilgore — Gifted and Talented students from 15 area school districts traveled to Kilgore on Tuesday to take part in the fourth annual robotics competition at Region 7 Education Service Center.
Coordinators estimated about 250 first- through third-grade students attended the Planning Perfect Playgrounds event. Each school’s team showcased designs to judges who then awarded certificates based on innovation, creativity, uniqueness and peer choice.
“We’ve been coming for a few years, and it’s just a great way for the kids to express their creativity,” said Jaime Cowan from Union Grove, whose two sons, Colton and Cason, were participating. “They get excited to show what they’ve done.”
Students used LEGO Education WeDo Construction Sets alongside robotic programming software provided by Region VII to construct the models. Student authored fictional stories about each playground accompanied the models.
