About 301 million trees — about 6.2 percent of trees statewide — were killed as a result of last summer’s devastating drought, a Texas A&M Forest Service survey of hundreds of forested plots across the state showed. However, the survey also showed that East Texas was spared the worst of tree mortality damage.

The number was determined by a study of both on-the-ground tree health assessments collected during a three-month period earlier this year and satellite imagery from before and after the drought.
