The Pew Research Center reported that almost half of the gun owners they surveyed said protection was their main reason for buying a gun.

Which was a big change from the study they conducted in 1999 when the same amount of owners cited hunting as their main reason.

So why the switch?

Well, 79 percent of people said having the gun makes them feel safer.

The study says crime has gone down by 48 percent, but some people are not that optimistic.

"Some crime has gone down but the kind of crime that would make people want to go buy a firearm to protect themselves," said John Moore. "I think they're probably going up."

John Moore, Public Information Officer for the Smith County Sheriff's Office, warned of one crime in particular.

"Home invasions are on the rise in east Texas," Moore said.

Mack Woods, wwner of The Shootist, said that he has seen a rise in the purchase of guns used for protection.

"I think there's certainly an interest in personal defense in general," Woods said. "Much of a persons protection has to be self protection, you have to do it yourself."
