When you hear the term binge drinking, you may be more inclined to think of teens or young adults.

But what if we told you those who binge drink the most are you grandmother's age?

The Center for Disease Control says though more young adults binge drink than other age group, it's the ones 65 and older that do it the most frequently.

Leslie Watson of MADD East Texas says it's a worrying statistic.

"Parents and adults are the greatest influence on young people and their decisions to drink, so anytime an adult is engaging in binge drinking, that can send a poor message to a teenager or even a young child," Watson said.

Local Psychologist Dr. Stephen Westmoreland says the results may be an indication of how some cope with the effects of old age.

"We begin to see the end of life," Westmoreland said. "With it comes illness and isolation, loss of family members, serial repetitive deaths, bereavements and disappointment. We wanna forget ... and sometimes its handy."

Westmoreland notes that excessive drinking may have added risks associated with common medical conditions in aging adults, too.

"One of the things we notice in older people is that the brain processing rate slows down, and there are things they just simply can't do," he said. "So when you start with less and have less muscle tone, mass, you are functioning more like a child than a middle aged adult. It affects you more."
