Surveyors from Global Geophysical Services are lining roads with orange cables and installing microseismic-detection equipment in areas in the city and across Nacogdoches County as they search for oil and gas in the Haynesville Shale, a corporate executive said Wednesday.

“We are conducting a multi-client seismic program in and around that area,” said Duncan Riley, vice president of GSS North America. “Our business is one of conducting seismic data acquisition. We put out a series of detectors that detect ground movement. It’s much like an ultrasound in that we put an energy source in and get a signal back.”

From there, the company analyzes data to determine the viability for further exploration.

“We attempt to image what the Earth’s subsurface looks like,” Riley said. “We are imaging the subsurface for structural formations for oil and gas. It’s a similar process to what we use in South Texas.”
Precinct 1 Commissioner Jerry Don Williamson said Nacogdoches County does not profit from such exploration.

“All they are doing is seismic work. Activity on the Haynesville Shale has been going on for a couple of years.”
