HOUSTON — A drug-trafficking suspect is dead and an undercover deputy is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg after an undercover drug operation ended in a shootout near Houston.

Harris County sheriff's spokeswoman Christina Garza says the 1:30 p.m. Monday shootout capped an undercover surveillance of a tanker truck in the northwestern Houston suburbs. Garza says other vehicles drove up and persons inside opened fire. Several suspects were arrested, but Garza had no specific number.

No identities have been released, but Garza says the deputy was expected to recover.

Meanwhile, a school bus struck two vehicles, including a car driven by a deputy racing to the wounded undercover officer's assistance. Deputy Thomas Gilliland says the deputy and two other drivers were treated for minor injuries. The bus driver was alone.

"The bus driver was alone."
I would have thought that there would be two maybe three people driving the bus.
This account is a journalistic nightmare.
