Suspected AK kidnapper arrested in Lufkin, found dead in cell

UPDATE: Anchorage police tell KETK Israel Keyes was found dead early Sunday morning in his jail cell.

They say it appears Keyes died from self inflicted wounds, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Keyes was believed to be a serial killer, responsible for at least 8 deaths.

His trial had been set for March.


The Anchorage Police Department has had two detectives in Texas for several days this week as they continue their investigation into the abduction of Samantha Koenig. 

On Tuesday, March 13, 2012, an arrest was made in Lufkin, Texas.  A person of interest, Israel Keyes, was taken into custody on charges related to the disappearance of Samantha Koenig. 

The whereabouts of Samantha Koenig are still unknown at this time.  The arrest was a multi-jurisdictional effort by the Anchorage Police, FBI, local law enforcement agencies in Lufkin, Texas, as well as the Texas Rangers.  The federal arrest warrant was sealed; therefore, details related to his charges will not be released at this time.  Keyes is being held in a federal facility in Beaumont, Texas.
