Pickup trucks are a mainstay here in the Lone Star State.

Which is why Texas leads all other states when it comes to tailgate thefts, and the numbers continue to grow year to year.

Over the past six years, 451 reports of tailgate thefts have been reported in Texas, dwarfing the numbers from all other states.

Theives then sell the parts online, or to body shops looking to score cheaper materials.

Experts tell KETK that investing in a tailgate lock maybe worth the money, and will most likely deter any possible attempts.

It's also a good idea to etch the vin on your tailgate, or other removable parts of your vehicle, so in case they are stolen, they have a better chance of being found.

The thing about etching your VIN number on the tailgate to prevent theft is that Pedro doesn't discover the number until he tries to sell the part to Juan's Autobody. A better deterrent is to put a big bumper sticker on the tailgate that says; "If you can read this then GET OFF MY OBAMA !"
